Summit Golden Crescent Resort & Spa, Gangtok

Project Location: Sichey, Gangtok District, Sikkim

Project Architect: Ar. Sonam Tashi

Status: Complete

Client: Summit Group of Hotels

Interior + Exterior / Hotel  Positioned close to the heart of the capital town, MG Marg, the structure has been taken over by the reputable Summit Hotels & Resorts group, and is now known as the Summit Golden Crescent. Built in a span of three years, our task was to renovate an originally three-storied RCC structure and convert it into a hotel with thirty-four rooms with an array of features for its guests.

To exhibit a warm mood, generous amount of timber and pinewood cladding have been used on the hotel’s interior walls and window frames. The ceramic tiles make up the flooring and the red clay bricks make the exterior walls. Oriented to bring in a magnificent view of Rumtek Hills, the structure is especially delightful on the top floors with its loft beds. The painted walls have been finished with cement plasters inside-out. The roofing comprises of galvanized steel sheet mounted on tubular mild steel framework.

The topography of the site is sloped like most of Gangtok’s terrain, on an average of about 30 to 40 degrees. The cross section is at about 30 feet, for most of the site and the land slopes away from the main road. This advantage has been used to place most of utility areas below the road level, and also helps to visually reduce the height of the building when viewed from the front.

Serving food and drinks to its in-house as well as other guests, the restaurant and bar at the ground floor can service up to sixty people. The restaurant walks out to a spill-out lounge and the structure also has a vibrant rooftop cafeteria. There is ample parking space deigned for visitors and guests and the structure’s most attractive feature would be its attic rooms. The check-in counter and lounge is located on the second floor which is accessed directly from the main road and parking area. With a banquet hall, on the top floor, to host meetings or intimate parties for up to 150 guests as well as a spa and parlour area as well, the structure has been designed in ways to accommodate guests and to meet the various needs of the new-age traveler. For the staff, there is a residential facility built. There is power backup provided; and the central boiler meets the hot water demands of the place.

With tourism booming, the town of Gangtok is sprawling with hotels. A structure that can provide its guests hospitality, warmth and comfort, we believe, is quite the intangible souvenir for any traveler to take back.
